Another act “signed” from a demo cd. Joe and Matt. These 8-bit type video game sounding (are they still called video games? I suppose not) cut-up tracks were totally different to all the other tired 8-bit type video game sounding efforts I was receiving (u kno – lo bit-rate drums and pointless monophonic casio riffs with no funk) and jumped out at me for some reason which I won’t try to analyse here. Well they do have a sort of playfulness and imagination at work… will this do? No? OK, here’s Boomkat’s review as well:
Blinding 16th installment in Planet Mu’s limited 7″ series, this time coming to us from West Yorkshire’s “Local”. “They Are Local” kicks off with some nifty analogue electrospasms that follow the Skanfrom handbook for synthpop pretty closely, before the track breaks halfway through and distorts itself into a genius spiritual follow-up to Aphex’s gigantic Windowlicker. Awesome stuff. “I am Local” on the flip is more fragmented, 8-bit sounds fracturing themselves allover the place before a squashed beat tumbles in and takes over. Killer, and limited as per usual.
