Planet Mu present ‘Powerpoints’, The Gasman’s tenth album in a career spanning eight years. Portsmouth’s Christopher Reeves has recorded releases for various imprints including Terminal Dusk, Sublight, The Centrifuge and his own label ‘Gasman Music’. His sound is that of a haunted seaside rave palace, very dreamlike, wonky and intense; reminiscent of some of the later Caretaker and v/vm releases, but with added influences of The Cardiacs, rave stab repetition, odd time signatures and the like. On Powerpoints his use of the piano has sparked comparisons with some of Philip Glass’s minimal pieces.
Chris was born in 1976 and grew up mainly listening to Cliff and Elvis until he got a radio of his own, when he got into taping synth-pop music off the radio and prolonging the good bits using the tape to tape function on his cassette recorder. Then he started playing chords over the top to make it more exciting/satisfying, almost turning them into my own bits of music.
At the age of 17 he was lent a Yamaha keyboard that let you program melodies and started making music incorporating records tapes and the Yamaha. Soon after he found an old Grundig reel to reel player and about 50 reels containing loads of old classical music and for ages after he went through them cutting out sections and making tape loops from to use.
