Xylitol launches her second album for Planet Mu, Blumenfantasie, at Club Cheek, Brixton, on April 4th, supported by Sculpture and DJs Slav to the Rhythm.
Xylitol draws together her formative influences of early jungle, garage, and kosmische musik, interspersed with elements of early Central and Eastern European electro, to draw connections and contrasts between dance music and vintage electronics. Blumenfantasie brings a sense of Mitteleuropean melancholy to the fore while pushing the rhythmic template of jungle and hardcore further and deeper than its predecessor, Anemones.
She is joined by fellow travelers and collaborators Sculpture, who combine unstable electronic music, animation and video art in transitory audiovisual forms.
During a live AV set by Sculpture, genre tropes, temporal signs and perceptual associations are reconfigured in the moment seeking multisensory overload. A volatile simultaneity links the duo’s visual turntablism and metamorphic sound. With a camera mounted on a Technics turntable and a chaotic library of zoetropic prints, visual artist Reuben Sutherland combines animation, tactile photo collage, and cutting edge digital technique in hyperkinetic patterns and op-art cuts. On sonics, musician Dan Hayhurst misuses samplers, tape loops, cassette players and CDJ deck to create an analogue/digital hybrid of outsider pop, experimental composition and improvised splatter.
DJ support comes from Slav to the Rhythm, the South Coast’s number one disco club for pan-Slavic bass music, Balkan electronics, Yugo-disco, experimental pop, synthwave, and electro from across Central and Eastern Europe. Started by DJ Sarma and Bunnyhausen in 2018, and later welcoming DJ Lofidelica to the ranks, the collective hosts a fortnightly radio show and irregular club nights. They have also brought their spirit of unbridled hedonism and wayward experimentation to Supernormal and Acid Horse festivals to a rapturous reception.
